New FIE Rules for 2014

Posted on February 28th, 2014 at 12:45 pm, in Club News, Fencing News

UPDATE: February 28, 2014

USA Fencing has apparently approved many of the FIE rules changes mentioned in the news from December for the 2014-2015 season! Be prepared for the new rules on corp-a-corp, non-combativity, and referee verbal abuse as well as a slew of other, minor changes. No word yet on the bout time limit changes. For more info on all of the changes, check out the article on Fencing.Net!

The FIE has announced a number of changes approved by the FIE Congress just last week. Some of these are being tested at the Junior World Championships, long used as the official testing ground for all new changes in the fencing world (such as the lame bibs in 2010). These rules have not been adopted by US Fencing yet, but it is usually only a matter of time and translation before they begin to trickle down to the national and regional levels.

Some of the rules that have been approved:

1. There will be no penalty in foil or saber for corps-a-corps! (It will still stop action, but no yellow card.)

2. Non-Combativity (redoux) to eliminate the 15 second portion of the rule, etc.

3. In Foil, beats to the lower 1/3 of the blade (nearest the forte) will constitute as an opposed parry!! (similar to saber)

Some of the rules that are being tested:

1. Reducing pool bouts from 3 minutes to 2 minutes.

2. Reducing DE periods from 3 periods (9 minutes total) to 2 periods (6 minutes total).

You can read more about these rule changes on Fencing.Net.
